Tips for keeping your skin youthful

Did you know that once we hit 25 our skin is actually classed as mature. This is when we start to lose collagen and we should start taking extra care of our skin to slow down the ageing process.

My Top Tips for keeping the skin looking younger for longer.

  1. Drink plenty of water. Have you ever noticed after a night of drinking alcohol the next day you look older? Also having the central heating on full in the winter also causes dehydration. Dehydration lines are very ageing, everyone should be drinking 2 + litres a day to prevent this. If you dont drink any water then start by drinking a pint a day, after a week up it to two pints a day and just keep upping it until you reach the amount you should be drinking. If your skin is dehydrated aswell as drinking water you can use some rehydration products like Clarin’s HydraQuench Serum, Clarin’s HydraQuench Mask and Clarin’s HydraQuench Moisturiser. All of these products will put lost water back into the skin making it look more youthful and radiant.
  2. Wear Sun Screen. UVB & UVA ray’s are responsible for 90% of ageing in the skin. You should always wear a sun screen, especially in hot weather and obviously avoid sunbeds. If you feel your skin needs abit of colour then try Clarins Radiance Plus which is a moisturiser with a hint of fake tan in it or try a Sienna X Spray Tan.
  3. Avoid Smoking as it starves your skin of oxygen and increases harmful free radicals which are ageing for the skin and can cause illness.
  4. Eat foods rich in Antioxidant’s. Antioxidant’s fight free radical’s in the body which destroy and kill our cells causing illness and ageing.
  5. Alternatively you can take an Antioxidant supplement or drink a Antioxidant Juice. Vitamin A, C and E are all Antioxidant’s aswell as Acai, Betacarotine & Goji Berries. See holland and Barrett.
  6. Get a good skincare routine. Never sleep in your make up and use high quality products. My favourite products are Clarin’s, Environ and Dermalogica.
  7. Have regular facial’s. The massage in a facial detoxify’s the skin and stimulate’s fresh blood and nutrients to the skin making it look younger and fresher. The products used in a facial like the scrub and the mask will help with the dehydration lines.
  8. Try and get lots of sleep, the minimum should be 6-8 hour’s. Your skin repair’s itself while you sleep. Lots of late nights will age your skin.

Ok so realistically none of us are saints and we all sometimes drink to much, eat the wrong things and have late nights ect. So to repair some of the damage after these occasions I would highly recommend Clarins Beauty Flash Balm. After cleansing or washing your face apply a think layer and leave it on for a minimum of 15 mins. There is no maximum time you should leave it on for, I sometimes sleep in it. This product is truly amazing and removes all signs of fatigue once you have washed it off just moisturize as normal. If you are going out again then mix a pea sized amount of Beauty Flash with your normal foundation and apply to the face. It makes such a difference. The other thing you can do is have a Berocca which full of Vitamin’s and Antioxidant’s. They are available from Boots and I find if I have had a late night that drinking a Berroca makes me feel and look a lot better. It can also be taken to boost your immune system.

How you can treat adult acne

Ok so this is a subject I know alot about. I suffered from Acne from the age of 22 on and off for over 6 year’s. As a teenager I suffered from the odd one or two spot’s nothing major then in my early twenty’s I had a big emotional shock and literally woke up the next day with Acne. Acne is classed as more than one spot but I would have up to twenty on my face at any one time. It was awful.

So after trying all the usual products at the chemist first and getting no-where the first thing I tried from the Doctors was Dianette. Dianette is a contraceptive pill that also helps with your skin. Its quite a potent pill and the doctors don't like you to be on it for long periods of time without a break. I took it for about 8 months in total and it did work really well for me, my skin cleared up within 6 weeks which was great. However it gave me another problem and that was I put on a lot of weight. So I stopped taking it and my skin did stay clear for 6 Months or so but then gradually the Acne came back.

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100000754.html – Dianette

The second thing I tried was Homeopathy. I am a big fan of Homeopathic remedies. I tried Homeopathy years ago when I used to suffer from Migraines and it worked amazingly, completely cured me infact. But with the Acne it definitely helped my skin, and reduced the spots but it didn't clear it up completely

The third thing I tried was Chinese Medicine in tablet form. Apparently the tea form is better and works more quickly but realistically there was no-way I was going to be getting up 45 minutes earlier everyday to boil herbs and what looks like tree bark to make a drink that taste’s hideous so I went for the easy / realistic option, the tablets. Chinese Medicine was amazing. At the time I started taking it my skin was at it’s worst and within two weeks my skin was completely clear for the first time in year’s. I couldn't believe it. I took the Chinese Medicine tablets for about 3 month’s. Each month represents a year you have had a problem / illness so if you have had Acne for 3 years you will need to take Chinese Medicine for 3 Months. My skin stayed clear for over a year once finishing the course but then once again I started suffering from break outs. They still weren't as bad as before but they were still bad enough for me to stress about them so once again I took Chinese Medicine but this time it didn't really seem to work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traditional_Chinese_medicine

The fourth thing I tried was anti-biotics. Once again my skin drastically improved, I still suffered from a couple of spots every month but nothing major. I took anti-biotics for 18 Months, I did try to come off them several times but my skin always got worse as soon as I stopped taking them.

During all of the above things I always had regular facial’s / facial treatments. Micro-dermabrasions were great for improving skin texture and refining the pore’s. They used to cost around £60, I used to get mine done at a Dermatologist. I also had N-Lite Laser which again is great for healing the skin, killing all the bacteria as well as helping with scaring, this was also done at Dermatologist and it would cost around £80 to get my jaw area done. I always had Advanced Clarin’s Facials to hydrate and deep cleanse and stimulate fresh blood to the skin. The products I used at home were Dermalogica Anti-Bac Skin Wash and Clarin’s HydraQuench Day Cream.

The fifth and final thing I did after 6 years of suffering from Acne was take the drug Roaccutane. After reading about all the horrible side effects I was really scared about taking this drug. The possible side effect’s are depression leading to suicide, extremely dry skin, redness, irritation, chapped lip’s, ache’s and pain’s due to dry joint’s and headache’s. They also say due to the potency of this medication you aren't supposed to drink alcohol as it’s too much for your liver. I have to admit I did actually drink but I definitely drank more moderately and ALWAYS drank two pints of water when I got home to rehydrate. This drug is also very harmful to unborn babies so if you were to fall pregnant you would have to have a termination. The side effect’s were pretty horrendous, I got all of them accept the depression. I would have to say that taking this drug is one of the best thing’s I have ever done with regards to treatment for my acne.

I stopped the course is April 2009 and my skin stayed completely clear for about 18 Months. I do still get the occasional breakout usually if I’m burning the candle at both ends or feeling a bit stressed. If my breakout last’s for longer than a couple of weeks I sometimes take anti-biotics to clear it but my skin has never been as bad as it was.

I would highly recommend anyone who has Acne to take the roaccutane. I spent hundreds of pounds on lotions and treatments and roaccutane is free on the NHS and it really does work. I wish I had done it year’s ago. Have a look at this photo diary I found of someone taking Roacutane  so you can get the idea.

http://www.acne.org/messageboard/index.php/topic/87675-accutane-gallery/

Some good products to use whilst on Roaccutane are Dermalogica Ultra Calming Cleanser and Clarin’s HydraQuench Day Cream for Dry Skin or Clarin’s Multi Active Day Cream for Dry Skin. You really need to use products that will deeply moisturize your dry skin and help with the flaking and peeling and Carmex is great for the chapped lips.

My dermatologist said a small number of people need more than one course of roaccutane so there is a chance my acne will come back but fingers crossed it won't.

These days if I do get the odd breakout the first thing I use is Quinoderm which is about £3 from Boots and its great. If they still have completely cleared up then I will have a couple of sunbeds. I don't agree with having sunbeds usually but for serious skin conditions I would have to say they do work.

What foods can you eat to boost the skin from within during the winter?

In this cold weather it’s more important to take care of your skin. Cold wind and central heating all play a part in dehydrating the skin and reducing radiance. There are some foods that will nourish your skin from within, heres just a few I know of.

1. Sweet potatoes. One of the best natural sources of beta-carotene, which your body turns into vitamin A to nourish your skin, sweet potatoes provide you with what your skin needs to stay looking great. Up to 262% of your daily Vitamin A needs can come from one single baked sweet potato. Bake Sweet Potatoes with the skin on to preserve the nutrients and taste. Sweet potatoes also have anti-inflammatory properties that can help sooth skin battered by the chilly winter wind.

2. Turnip greens. People shy away from eating turnip greens simply because they don’t know how to prepare them – but it’s a trick worth knowing. Turnip greens contain over 158% of your daily Vitamin A plus a variety of other skin-healthy vitamins and nutrients. To prepare turnip greens, rinse them well, remove the center stem, and then add them to your meals.

3. Walnuts. The anti-oxidants found in walnuts are essential to skin regeneration and elasticity, but walnuts also include chemicals  that help boost circulation, bringing oxygen and nutrients to your skin cells quickly. Just four walnuts a day will provide you with all their skin-protecting benefits. Try adding to Salads or cooked vegetables, or roast them at low heat for just 160 degrees for a tasty, healthy snack.

4. Acai Berries. The acai berry is a fruit from the Amazon rainforest, is one of the best sources of antioxidants you can get. Try frozen acai berry pulp, found in your grocer’s freezer section. The thick, rich, almost chocolaty-tasting paste can be mixed into smoothies or yogurt for a delicious treat that will make your skin glow.

5. Hemp. The single best source of vegetarian Omega fatty acids, ground hemp seed is a guaranteed win for your body and skin this winter. Omega fatty acids strengthen the membranes of your skin cells, making it stronger and allowing your skin to hold in all the moisture and nutrients you’re offering. Adding just two tablespoons of ground hemp seed – which contains 300 mg of Omega-3 and 850 mg of Omega-6 with GLA – to your diet can even help restore your skin . You can add this light, nutty powder to smoothies or salads.

If you struggle to eat healthy snacks everyday that will help your skin then I recommend taking a good multi vitamin like Berocca. This will boost your immune system and reduce fatigue in the face like sluggish skin and dark circles.

What is Environ Skin Care?

Environ is a cosmeceutical range which basically means pharmaceutical and medical science has been used when formulating the product. Environ contains the maximum permissible level of Vitamin A in a cosmetic product.

Environ was created over 20 years ago by Dr Des Fernandes who is a plastic surgeon in South Africa.

Environ is designed to put Vitamins back into your skin, particularly Vitamin A.

Vitamin A is present in all skins but is lost daily through light and free radical damage. This leads to ageing, dry skin, pigmentation, breakouts and sun damage. Also most common skin cancers are associated with low levels of Vitamin A.

So what will Vitamin A do for your skin?

•    It will repair your skin cell DNA by normalizing the skin cells.

•    It will stimulate cell turnover which means your skin will naturally exfoliate itself.

•    It will smooth and compact the top layer of the skin creating a healthy barrier to protect the skin.

•    Over time it will thicken your epidermis so will have a plumping effect on the skin so will help with lines, ageing and wrinkles.

•    It will stimulate the blood flow to and from the skin which will in turn detoxify the skin and also bring fresh blood and nutrients to the skin.

•    It will normalize your sebaceous glands (skins natural oil) so if you suffer from extremely dry skin or extremely oily skin it will normalise this for you.

•    It will stimulate the skin collagen. We start to lose our collagen once we hit 25 and this causes us to age so it’s important to boost the collagen where we can.

•    It will lock in your skins natural moisture. This is important to prevent the skin becoming dry.

•    It will boost your skins immunity so in-turn will prevent skin breakouts and infections.

•    It will repair cell melanocyte damage so helps with pigmentation.

Take a look at some of the results that have been achieved with Environ http://www.environ.co.za/resultsHere are some online reviews http://www.smartskincare.com/reviews/product/brandidx/environ/The idea is the more Vitamin A we get into our skin the healthier it will be but Vitamin A must be introduced slowly. There is an easy to follow step up routine to suit all skin types. The great thing about Environ is as our skins are made of Vitamin A no-one can be allergic to it. If you are concerned with ageing, acne, pigmentation, oily skin, dry skin or maybe you just want to maintain a healthy skin then I would thoroughly recommend Environ.

Environ AVST range – What is it?

Environ AVST face creams are designed to put vitamin A back into the skin Please read my last blog to see the benefits of vitamin A for our skin. AVST stands for advanced vitamin skin therapy. It is designed for all skin types and all ages. The product is made of vitamin’s A & C aswell as anti-oxidants and flavinoids. The idea is the more vitamin A we put back into our skin the better our skin will be but the vitamin A must be introduced slowly and gradually.

environ AVST face cream

The contra-indications to vitamin A are roaccutane users and clients that have been using retin A (very high level of vitamin A).

AVST 1 – It has very low levels of vitamin A, it is for first time users of vitamin A. The benefits are it will normalise and repair your skin, it will protect from free radical damage, it will protect from UV damage, it will hydrate and heal, will combat the signs of ageing by stimulating the collagen in the bottom layer of your skin and is anti bacterial. Use 1-2 bottles then progress to AVST 2.

AVST 2 – It has mild levels of vitamin A, it is for users who have been using AVST 1 for 1-2 months. It has the same benefits. Use 1-2 bottles then progress to AVST 3.

AVST 3 – It has medium levels of vitamin A, It is for users who have used AVST 1 & 2. It has the same benefits. Use 1-3 bottles then progress to AVST 4

.AVST 4 – It has high levels of vitamin A, It is for users who have used AVST 1,2 & 3. You should use this for 6-12 months before progressing onto AVST 5. When progressing onto level 5 it is a good idea to use AVST 4 in the morning and AVST 5 in the evening so you are introducing it slowly.

AVST 5 – This has the highest levels of vitamin A. It has the same benefits but at this strong level this is when the vitamin A will really start to work on your pigmentation, wrinkles, lines and scaring. After AVST 5 we can progress onto Retinal 1,2 and 3 or Ionzyme range.

How we use AVST cream – Apply morning and evening to a thoroughly cleansed face and throat in an upward movement including the eye area. It is advised you must use a sun screen every day on top of the AVST.

AVST Pre cleansing oil -  removes make up, oil and debris from the skin to facilitate the penetration of active ingredients. It inhibits skin surface water loss, its hydrating, soothing and calming. Apply to face and neck then massage in with damp hands to form a milky emulsion. Remove excess with water then follow with appropriate cleanser. Eye make-up can be removed with pre-cleansing oil as well.

AVST cleansing lotion – Hydrates, removes excess oils, make up and impurities whilst maintaining the natural PH of the skin. Apply to face and neck, massage well and remove with tepid water or damp cotton wool.

AVST moisturizing toner – Mildly exfoliating, evens skin tone and texture, hydrates, protects from free radical damage and is a penetrant enhancer which means it will prepare the skin for your AVST cream and help with the penetration of the active ingredients in the cream. After you have pre cleansed and then cleansed apply the toner to a cotton pad and wipe over the face and neck. Follow with appropriate AVST cream

.AVST Eye gel – Very low levels of vitamin A, repairs skin cells, protects from free radical damage, heals and hydrates, stimulates collagen, firms and tightens. Apply am and pm around the eye area after you have done your cleansing routine before you apply your AVST cream.

AVST Moisture gel – The lowest level of vitamin A in a face gel, lower then AVST 1. Most people can start on AVST 1 but if you do get a retinoid reaction to AVST 1 then the moisture gel is another option. Use 1-3 bottles before progressing onto AVST 1.

Possible side effects to vitamin A - When using products that contain Vitamin A your skin can develop a retinoid reaction. The symptoms of this are dryness and flakiness, redness and sometimes a break out of pimples. This can happen when you first start using the products or when you are using a level of vitamin A that is too high for your skin. If you get this when you first start using Environ if the reaction is slight then you can continue to use the products and wait for the phase to pass usually anything from 2-6 weeks. If the reaction is more severe it is recommended you go down to a lower level of AVST like the moisture gel or even the AVST body oil. If you get a severe retinoid reaction when you go up a level on the AVST it is recommended that you go back to your previous level and introduce the higher level again once the reaction has cleared up but introduce slowly like once a day every other day. If your skin is struggling with the acclimatization to vitamin A  you can take vitamin A capsules orally to help.

Cleansing questions?

Are pre-cleansers really necessary?

Pre-cleansing is a vital part of a two step cleansing process. Its first in-line to provide deep, specific cleansing and helps to to lift off surface debris that can cause break-outs and dullness. This should be followed with facewash or cleanser for complete cleanliness. Environ oil based pre cleansers are help you achieve a clean healthy skin with a double regimen that melts off the layers of unwanted sebum (skin oil), make up, pollutants, sweat and grime that build up throughout the day. A mineral based pre-cleanser such as B-Active sebu prep with soothe and improve problem skin whilst cleaning and unblocking the pores.

Certain cleansers leave my skin feeling tight. How do I know which one to use?

The right cleanser will leave your skin feeling comfortable and relaxed. A soap free foaming wash is great for a normal skin. Dry or sensitive complexions need gentle and hydrating formulation that wont strip your skin of natural oils. Oily or problematic skins need a mild foaming gel cleanser to keep excess oil at bay. Environ do a full range of cleansers and foaming washes for all skin types.

Why shouldn't I use soap to clean my face?

Regardless of your skin type or age soap is definitely not recommended. Your skin is naturally acidic and soaps are alkaline which means they strip your skin of your natural oils and acid mantle which is there to protect your skin and maintain your natural moisture levels. Using soap will strip this off leaving your skin dry and flaky, soap is way too harsh for the skin.

AVST Cleanser, AVST Pre-Cleansing oil,  Sebu Prep, Sebu Wash,  C-Quence Cleanser

I can recommend the right cleanser for your skin http://laurasmobilebeautytreats.com.com/

Toning Questions

Are Toners really useful?

Toners are often undervalued in a beauty routine when in fact its your toner that completes your cleansing routine. If excess oil or make up is left on the skin it will clog your pores, mild alcohol free toners will remove this and prepare your skin for to absorb your moisturizer ect. The best toners wont strip your skin of its natural oils and will leave it feeling energized and fresh.

toners

I have oily, acne-prone skin, do I need to use a toner?

An acidic toner will be beneficial for oily skin- It will pick up any leftover residue after cleansing and assist in maintaining the PH balance of the skin, which will reduce the risk of infection. B-Active Sebutone is great for extremely oily skin or acne prone skin, helping to degrease with lactic acid and disinfect with T- Tree oil. I love Environ Toners, AVST Toner, C Quence Ionzyme Toner & Sebu Tone. Give them a try!

My views on Foundations

Over the years I have tried and used many different foundations. I tried Mac, Clarins & Clinique.

I personally found Mac to be to heavy. I think Mac would be great for a photography studio photoshoot but I think for day to day wear its a bit too much unless you like a really heavily made up look. I also found it blocked my pores.

With the Clarin’s foundation I found none of the colours were an exact match. Either too light or too dark. Again the coverage was a bit heavy and I found it didn't look natural.

I absolutely love Clinique foundation. The colour matched exactly, it's not too heavy so it definitely looks natural and that's the look I personally prefer. It gave my skin a natural flawless finish. I really like the Super Balanced Foundation which rehydrates the dry areas and dries out the oily areas. I also really like Clinique loose powder and the Airbrush Concealer which is great for covering dark circles but is light in texture so doesn't accentuate fine lines around the eyes.

How do I get rid of the little broken veins around my nose and cheeks?

Sometimes these broken capillaries can be genetic but they are usually a result of sun damage, smoking, harsh temperatures or treating the skin roughly. Over indulgence in alcohol / spicy food can also make them flare up. You can get rid of them semi-permanently with laser treatments. Vitamin C helps to reduce the appearance of smaller threads and colostrum wraps collagen around the capillaries therefore strengthening them. You can treat topically and internally with capsules.

I like these Environ C Boost, Environ Colostrum, Skin Vit C Capsules, Colostrum Capsules.

Environ Cool Face Peel - What is it?

New Treatment offered – Cool Face Peel.

What is it? The cool peel is a mild peel made of lactic acid. Our skins are made of lactic acid so it is the safest way to peel our skin.  The percentage of lactic acid in the professional peel is 5%.

Suitable for

  • All skin types
  • Particularly good for oily, acne or rosacea
  • Thickened sun damaged skin

Not suitable for - Hyper pigmentation should not be treated because when we peel our skin we make it more susceptible to uv penetration and consequently that can lead to more melanin being produced so the condition can get worse.

Benefits you can see

  • Remove excess dead skin cells without damaging or striping the skin
  • Thickens the epidermis of our skin
  • Soften and smooths wrinkles and fine lines
  • Improve skins radiance / natural moisture
  • Reduces and prevents breakouts
  • Will lighten superficial pigmentation
  • Reduces redness
  • Kills bacteria

Whats actually happening - Growth factors will stimulate the production of collagen and elastin to tighten the skin reducing lines, wrinkles and making the skin plumper. Cool peels result in the release of TGF (Transforming growth factor) which is responsible for scar less healing.

Preparation for the cool peel.

  • Clients must be using a Vitamin A cream for a minimum of 3 weeks prior to treatment.
  • Patch test 48 hours before.

Contra-indications

  • Skin not prepared with Vitamin A
  • Excessive Sun bed users / recent exposure to the sun
  • Diabetes or other major illness – doctors note required
  • Radiation treatment
  • Skin deasease like Porphyria
  • Roaccuatane
  • Recent dermabrasion or laser resurfacing treatments
  • Waxing of the area is not recommended 10 days before or after the peel.

Skin care after peeling

  • Avoid sun exposure for minimum of 7 days
  • Sunscreen must be worn daily
  • No swimming in the sea or swimming pool for 24 hours
  • Do not pick or rub the skin
  • Avoid use of AHA or other exfoliating products for 48 hours
  • Make up and normal skincare can be worn

For stubborn skin conditions a course is recommended

  • Problematic skin –  Treat once a week for 6 weeks. Support daily with the home peel kit.
  • Sun Damaged skin – Treat once a week for 6 weeks and support with the home peel kit 2-3 times per week.

Please note the home peel kit has 2.5% of lactic acid and the professional one is 5% lactic acid. Laura's Mobile Beauty Treats now offers facial peels. See facials in the treatment section. www.laurasmobilebeautytreats.com

Can you shrink enlarged open pores?

The size of your pores is genetic. You can minimise large pores on the nose and chin with intensive treatment from a trained skincare therapist. Regular use of a pore minimising will help clear them of oily residue - minimising ingrained oily build up will prevent them from appearing larger then they are. Products like Environ B- Active Sebu range with salicylic acid will help unclog the pores and dissolve oil build up. High levels of Vitamin A will also help reduce enlarged pores. Sun damage can make pores look larger so protect with a light SPF like Alpha Day Lotion. Do not over-cleanse your skin as this will stimulate oil production.

All of these products will help with blocked pores.http://www.environ.co.za/ranges/b-active-range, http://www.environ.co.za/ranges/avst-range, http://www.environ.co.za/ranges/ionzyme-range, http://www.environ.co.za/products/intensive-alpha-hydroxy-cream, http://www.environ.co.za/products/intensive-alpha-hydroxy-gel

My skin gets dull and dry in winter, even though I moisturise. What can i do?

Skin will naturally get drier in the cold weather. Also being in the central heating will also dehydrate the skin. Absence of sunlight skin produces less oil resulting in a dull complexion and more visible dehydration lines. Using something like Environ Ionzyme Hydrating Serum regularly will help. To maximize the result I would first cleanse and tone with environ AVST cleanser and Toner then use the home Cosmetic roll kit. Roll the skin for 3-5 minutes creating little channels into the skin for deeper absorption. Apply the Hydration Serum and leave the skin for 5-10 mins before applying your daily vitamin cream.www.laurasmobilebeautytreats.com

The Dermaroller - What is it?

New Treatment- Derma Roller Collagen Stimulation Therapy ™ otherwise known as the DermaRoller or Micro Needling is a cutting-edge treatment technique that harnesses your body’s natural powers of healing to increase collagen and achieve incredible results. It is especially effective for addressing the visible signs of ageing, as well as sun damage, scarring, slackened skin, stretch marks, uneven skintone and dilated blood vessels. Pioneering South African plastic surgeon and founder of Environ skincare Dr. Des Fernandes developed the process of pricking the skin with multiple tiny needs to stimulate collagen production without causing any damage to the epidermis back in 1996.

What will happen during the treatment? - During this revolutionary procedure, a skincare professional will apply a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort and will use a small instrument containing tiny needles (1mm on the face – 3mm on the body) to create thousands of microscopic channels in your skin.  This causes a minimal amount of bleeding that stops within minutes. After the treatment your practitioner will apply nourishing vitamins A and C to your skin followed by a soothing face mask.

How it works - The body responds to Collagen Stimulation Therapy ™ in the same way as it would to an injury.  The small amount of bleeding caused during treatment releases powerful growth factors, part of a natural healing response that results in increased collagen and elastin production.

What do I have to do to prepare for this treatment? - It is vitally important that the skin is first prepared with Environ vitamin A products for a minimum of 3 weeks prior to treatment.  Ideally it should be 3 months. The longer the skin has been prepared with vitamin A the faster and better it will heal.  Vitamin A has been proven to thicken the epidermis and increase collagen deposition.

What can I expect after the treatment? - The tiny holes in the skin close completely within 12 hours and it has been shown that after 12 hours there is no evidence of any damage to the epidermis (the surface of the skin). The bleeding stops almost immediately and the skin is left flushed (like a sunburn) for only about 24 hours. Although on a more sensitive skin the redness can sometimes last longer. The redness will decrease day by day but a slight pinkness can last up to 3 days. The healing phase lasts between 5 and 7 days and during this time the skin can feel dry and tight and will often flake. Some people can also experience a few spots.  After this the skin will look radiant, smooth and fresh.

The result

It will take longer to notice the tightening effects from Collagen Stimulation Therapy ™.  Dr Des Fernandes, known as the founding father of needling, has been performing micro-needling treatments since the early 1990s. One of the main things that he has learnt is that effects take time and the best results are achieved after multiple treatments (minimum of 6).  It takes time for the skin to lay down a thick layer of collagen and we advise that people should not expect to see significant tightening results until around 3 months after your first treatment.  People will then start to notice something different and comment on how good your skin is looking. The skin will continue to improve even after 6 months and treatments can be repeated.

ADVANTAGES OF SKIN NEEDLING ARE:

  • The first advantage is that this procedure does not permanently damage the skin.  The skin actually becomes thicker.
  • The healing phase is short.
  • The procedure is not painful due to the anaesthesia (topical only required for 1mm depth needling); there is also no post operative pain.
  • It is not as expensive as laser resurfacing.
  • Sun-sensitivity is a major and enduring problem in laser resurfacing, whereas after needling of the skin, the horny layer rapidly returns to its original thickness and the skin is not sun sensitive.
  • A major advantage is that this needling can be done on people who have had laser resurfacing, or those with very thin skin.
  • A very gratifying change occurs in dilated blood vessels, which may disappear.
  • The other advantage is that this does not really have to be done by a plastic surgeon or dermatologist.  The technique is easy to master because it does not require the artistic skills that are imperative in a tattoo artist.
  • If the result after the percutaneous collagen induction is not satisfactory to the patient, it can be repeated without any risk.

For best results, a series of six collagen stimulation Therapy treatments should be done at intervals between one week and one month, depending on clients time and skin recovery time.
